The Cups Quarter Finals Review.

Here’s hoping that you enjoyed the Rugby over the weekend as much as I did..Here are those results for you:
Mwamba Cup:
KCB II 41-8 Kenya Poly
USIU 25-20 Mwamba II
Impala II 24-17 Strathmore II
Multimedia 12-34 Mombasa RFC
Enterprise Cup:
Quins 39-13 Kisumu RFC
KCB 14-3 Strathmore
Impala 23-6 Homeboyz
Nondies 37-17 Western Bulls
In the Mwamba Cup, the outstanding result has to be USIU’s win over Mwamba II, the Kenyan diaspora students upsetting the second string Kulabu side. Other results saw Mombasa RFC beating MMU while KCB II steam rolled past Kenya Poly with Impala II edging out Strath II.
In the Enterprise Cup, the two fairy tale runs were quickly halted at the weekend when Western Bulls went down to Nondies and Kisumu to Quins. Impala eventually winning the Cheetahs battle after seeing off Homeboyz with KCB beating a tough Strath side at the cage (the cage should be or rather is Strath’s home ground.)
Those results set up very finely poised and mouth watering clashes in the semis, like so:
Enterprise Cup:
Impala vs Nondies
KCB vs Quins

The Mwamba Cup fixtures will be released during the week. I’m already looking forward to the weekend..
In the match of the weekend, the English counties successfully made it three wins out of three in their tour of East Africa after seeing off the Elgon Warriors 34-14 at the RFUEA. This was their second win over the warriors with the other win coming against a Uganda select side.
Frankly I did not watch much of this game so I won’t sit here and try reviewing it but I’ll say this that every time I turned away from my drink to take a peek at the match it was usually to one of three things:
  1. The English Counties forwards dominating us, especially at the scrum.
  2. A Dan Adongo moment, this included but not restricted to :
    a. Him supporting a run e.g The Patrice try that was denied
    b. Him roughing up a group of more than 3 jungus..the roughing up came in various forms, kubomoa, kutaka kupiga ama tackle, like the time he inuad the Counties 9 like a toi.
  1. The ref making a questionable decision..the examples are endless here.
Anyway it was a much improved performance from the boys from what I saw, the introduction of the more natural Mutai and K’opondo at second row stabilized our pack even though the Counties did dominate us at the scrums it was not as much as they did in Kampala.
MoTM from this one was Rory Teague the Counties Fly half who I have mentioned here before.
It was a tour that will be remembered more for its historical significance than what happened on the green, it was the first time the Tuskers or as they are known now the Elgon Warriors were playing in Nairobi since 1982. Let’s hope they are kept alive in the years to come, the experience the players gained from the two games is invaluable.
In other news I can confirm that Mike Friday is finally here, met him over the weekend, No that should be I said hi to him after the Counties game.
Finally I end this post on a sad note with the news of the demise of Silas Amunga, formerly of Kisumu RFC and Mombasa RFC, Amunga passed away at the weekend after a short illness. He was part of the Lions side that won the BRSS title in 2008..may the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace, my prayers go out to the family and friends during this trying period.
With that ladies and gentlemen…have a great week ahead..aaannndddd..
KWISHA…Nimueruka Nje!!

Safari Sevens, Twenty Seven!

The twenty-seventh edition of Africa’s premier sevens tournament, the Safari Sevens, is set for the 10th to 12th of October at the Nyayo National Stadium. The tournament returns to the Nyayo Stadium since 2021 (first edition after Covid). Still, perhaps more memorably, since it was played there for the first time in 2011, when Samoa […]
