Injera To Captain Kenya Sevens To Vegas And Wellington

Collins Injera will take over the captaincy of the Kenya sevens side to the Vegas and Wellington legs in the absence of skipper Andrew Amonde, who sits out owing to a shoulder injury.

The squad that was named earlier today by head coach Paul Treu sees four players return to the squad. Oscar Ouma, who missed the last two legs due to school commitments, Humphrey Kayange who features for the first time since the world cup. Dennis Ombachi finally makes his long awaited return from a knee injury and Mike Agevi who last featured under Mitch Ocholla.

The inclusion of Agevi sees the exciting prospect of seeing the three siblings from the Emonyi household play together, take a moment and imagine how proud the folks must be….

The 12 man squad features one new face in Tony Owuor of Strathmore, the big forward finally making his debut after impressing in the local circuit, to replace the injured skipper. The rest of the squad features the same names that featured in Dubai and George in Skuta, Ayodi, Billy, Agunda, Horace and Biko.

Interesting to note that the squad features no natural sweepers with Mike Wanjala, Felix Ayange and Sidney Ashioya all missing. So who will defend the ’70 meters? Injera maybe or his younger brother Agevi.

This will be the first time in two seasons that we will miss the services of Andrew Amonde, that statement alone a testament of the man’s service to the side, he rarely gets injured. His contribution to the side has seen no match, but with the inclusion of Kayange and return of Oscar you feel we have enough cover for the work horse.

Last season, the Wellington and Vegas legs gave us our best and worst returns, a cup final in the former and a Shield Semi final in the latter. This season the team will obviously be out to improve on those marks and most importantly be consistent, we have so far made the cup quarter finals in the last three legs.

This year we start in Vegas, where we are pooled against South Africa, Wales and Canada in Pool A. A tricky trio..

The side leaves for Vegas on Sunday morning, the tournament is slated for the 24 to the 26th.
