Journey To The Promised Land

The pack giggle as I bench press at the R.F.U.E.A gym. Its the 3rd week of training and despite my consistency, I still have a long way to go before I can catch up with the fitness levels of the Kenya Lionesses.

The team Manager Doris Mwanzia trains with me under the supervision of the strength and conditioning coach Mika Shamia who pushes us to the limit. Our presence at the training session of the Kenya Lionesses is welcome by the girls who feel that we can ‘get our sexy back’ as they call it.

They also don’t feel left out as their male counterparts often receive visitors during their training sessions. Members of the 4th Estate aren’t left behind as the lovely Shiko Mwenda from K24 finds time to attend some of the sessions with NTV female sports anchor following suit.

Promised Land

The team is focused on becoming a core team in the IRB Women Sevens World Series and they all draw their motivation from that. Major milestones stand in their way and as the experienced players cheer on the rookies, the passion at the training sessions is evident.

Head coach Kevin Wambua is keen on leaving a mark at the HongKong 7s which the team has been invited to play on 27th – 28th March. Its a key tournament as their performance will be key in the frequency of invitation to play in the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.

Almost immediately after the Hong Kong fixture, the Lionesses next task will be the CAR Women Sevens. Kenya won the bid to host the tournament which is scheduled for 7th – 12th of April 2014 at the Machakos Stadium. All matches will be played on the 12th. Various training programs will be conducted prior to the games.

The bowl of soup and buns is always a welcome relief after a hard training session. Unfortunately on this day there isn’t some but I smile to myself knowing that I got cookies in my bag. As we finish the evening prayer, I swiftly but discreetly fish out my cookies…… I can’t possibly explain what happened after… those are what we call DETAILS! I didn’t have any cookies but I smiled all the way home. Goal of the day achieved.
