The Catholic Monks and Kabras sugar booked their spots in next season’s top flight after wins in their respective Nationwide Semi-final matches.
The Monks had an easier route to the Kenya Cup, winning 39-7 against Kakamega at their university grounds. Many had expected this one to be a close contest but the hosts were clearly a class above the Western Conference runners up.
The other semi-final a few kilometres away also went against expectations as TUK stretched the favourites Kabras all the way at the Africa Nazarene grounds. Kabras who were expected to blow past TUK found the going tough but had enough to see off their spirited hosts.
After eighty minutes the sides were tied at 3-3, meaning the sides had to be separated at extra time. Kabras finally finding a way past the TUK defence and book a date against the Monks at 8-3.
TUK and Kakamega can be proud of their seasons, especially TUK who were handed this chance after the disqualification of USIU. The sides can now start working towards giving themselves this same chance next season, with the knowledge of what is required to get here.
This being Kenya rugby though, the ground below our feet usually tends to shift very fast, thus these two might want to keep the celebrations on hold and hope for the best. What is sure is that the two will meet in the Nationwide final next weekend.
This final might end up deciding who between the two actually joins the Kenya Cup with whispers doing rounds that only one side will be handed the golden ticket. The ideal situation will be that the two’s efforts are recognised and the union keeps the word they gave at the beginning of the season.
