Today we preview what many consider to be the Pool of death at the Driftwood sevens, Pool C.
Headlined by Nakuru who finished 3rd in Dala, the Wanyore are joined by Western Bulls, former sevens specialists Mwamba and Blak Blad. It will be safe to say that these sides will not enjoy the traditionally ‘easy’ Day 1 fixtures.
Nakuru have been one of the sides that has improved greatly over the two legs, bowing out at the Plate semis in Kabeberi then following this up with a third place finish in Kisumu. The Wanyore seem to have found their footing in the shorter version and will be out to improve further at the coast.
The side currently lies in 6th spot on the overall log, with 27 points and are still in the chase for the overall title.
The possible inclusion of Oscar Ouma to the squad will go a long way to reaching their goals. With the ever reliable Edwins Makori back in the fold alongside Philip Kwame the side will have enough fire power in the forwards.
After making a slow start in Kabeberi where they failed to get past the Bowl semi finals, Western Bulls picked themselves up to reach the Plate final in Kisumu. Those results placing the Echulusi in 9th position on the log with 17 points.
The side will be banking on the likes of Davis Chenge and Bram Shikhanda to help them navigate through this pool and qualify for the cup competition on Day 2.
It was expected by many that this would be the season that Mwamba would reclaim former sevens glory. So far the black shirts have failed to show any signs of doing that, a Plate semi final exit at their backyard, Kulabu failed to get past the Bowl semi final where they lost to Kisumu.
In Mombasa the black shirts will probably unleash their sevens army, well whatever they hadn’t utilised so far. The Emonyi duo of Mike Agevi and Collins Injera, with Dennis Ombachi should probably slot back into the fold, to link up with Dan Skuta and Horace Otieno. They will definitely miss the services of Lavin Asego who is out through injury.
Last year the black shirts started off strongly before fading away in the home stretch. They currently lie in 10th spot on 15 points. Will they find the kick to finish this season strongly?
The under dog in this pool will be Kenyatta University’s Blak blad, an under dog that packs quite a bite.
Blad are currently in 13th spot on the log, with 7 points after two rounds. Those points, coming courtesy of a Bowl semi final exit in Nairobi and a Shield final in Dala. Those results not doing justice to what has been a spirited Blad performance so far, running the likes of Homeboyz close at Kabeberi.
The side will be no push over in this pool and will be up to cause some upsets here.
All the matches in this pool will be highlights, from Nakuru taking on Mwamba, to Mwamba taking on Blad and everything in between. It is one of those pools where you wouldn’t want to miss a match.
