Bulls Stun Mwamba As Kabras Make Statement

Western Bulls claimed their second win in as many matches in dramatic fashion, courtesy of a last minute Alvin Odwako penalty to sink Mwamba 16-15 at the Kakamega High school.

Two wins in two translates to strongest start to a Kenya cup season in the Echulusi’s short history in the top flight. They currently sit in fifth spot on 8 points.

In other results, Kabras outscored defending champions Nakuru in the number of tries scored. Kabras managed to touch down twice with the Wanyore only going over once. Man City will be ruing their chances especially off the boot as they fell to a 13-10 score.

There were also wins for KCB, Nondies, Strathmore, Quins and Impala who beat Homeboyz 45-7 on Friday night.

Nato Simiyu was the conductor at the Impala show on Friday night, as the red shirts run rampant against the Djs. After last weekend’s 40-29 loss to Mwamba, Impala needed to get back to winning ways in their first home game of the season, and get back they did.

An early Sam Oliech try at the corner, was all the red shirts needed to settle into the match. It was always expected that Impala would have the upper hand in the forwards, it was in the backs where we all expected a battle. However as the match progressed, the Djs looked disjointed especially at the backs, with their forwards doing well to hold their own against a much more experienced set of forwards.

A Sammy Oliech penalty stretched Impala’s lead to 8-0 midway through the first half. A moment of brilliance at the end of the half saw Nato Simiyu place a perfectly timed cross kick into the hands of Anthony Nyandigisi who jogged to score, Oliech’s conversion making it 15-0 at the break.

A Felix Ojow try early in the second half looked to have set up a comeback for the Djs at 15-7, but it was not to be. Another penalty from Oliech made it 18-7, with Quinto going over moments later to take the score to 23-7.

The match would remain deadlocked for large parts of the second half before Impala exploded into life in the last quarter of the match, as Homeboyz capitulated. Four quick fire tries from Nyandigisi, Oliech, Lameck Dunde and Joel Omer put the result beyond doubt, with the Full time score reading 45-7.

A brilliant display from the hosts on the day, that performance should quickly sink any memories of the result at the Railway club. Impala’s back line was something to behold, led by the half back pair of Michael ‘Kiki’ Mugo and Nato Simiyu. Sammy Oliech was devastating at full back, Jeffrey Anampiu and Anthony Nyandigisi working hard at the centre of the park.

At the UoN grounds, the Leos overcame a 15-14 half time scare, to record a 35-15 result against Blak Blad in the first of two matches at the venue. In the second encounter, Quins kept pounding at a stubborn Machine side to eventually claim a 33-5 result.

KCB put 90 points against Mombasa’s 3 at the Mombasa Sports Club, as Nondies beat the Catholic Monks 56-11 at the Jamuhuri Show grounds.
