Kabras’ Fairy Tale 80 Minutes Away From A Happy Ending

If you had told anyone at the start of the season, including myself, that Kabras would be in the Kenya cup final after beating the defending champions, at home. They would have probably laughed at you, hard. I know I would have. But here we are…

It shouldn’t be a surprise though, as this Kabras side christened ‘Man City’ don’t seem to know how to do things small time. Remember their debut in the sevens series? They then went on to lift the Nationwide title in their debut season, and are now eighty minutes away from replicating that run in the top flight.

After carefully recruiting to rebuff their Nationwide winning side, for what was going to be a challenging season in the Kenya Cup. The sugar millers wasted not time announcing their intentions, stretching KCB in their first encounter at the Den eventually losing out 13-3.

At this point, I reviewed my expectations of the side after watching that game. They were not here just to participate but actually challenge for this title. Not many were convinced though. They then went on to vindicate my assessment over the next weeks.

The performance against Nakuru the very next week, followed by the results against Impala, Western Bulls, Homeboyz and Strathmore solidified their placing as a title contender. The results against Nondies and Mwamba though revealed a soft under belly, going into the Semis against Nakuru could they pull off the biggest upset of the season?

At the NAC on Saturday, Man City were put under the cosh but beat all odds and emerged 15-12 winners to book a spot in the final. That monumental win saw Kabras bring Nakuru’s long standing home unbeaten run to a screeching halt, that and the one they had put together this season.

Many will say that it is the money that got Kabras here, while it might be a factor you cannot deny that this team has worked its soles off to get here. Under Anthony Ogot they have acquired the services of the Kenya 15s strength and conditioning coach Richard Ochieng and Australian coach Mike Bishop, though temporarily, at certain points this season.

Theirs can be no fluke, seeing as their second team were also as impressive, making it to the semi finals before losing to defending champions KCB II 15-9.

So will the fairytale that is Kabras Sugar RFC’s season have a happy weekend at the weekend?

Meanwhile have you voted for us at the BAKE awards here? Well what are you waiting for, do so now by and tell a friend, Thank you!
