The Nairobi side, KQ Select, which comprised of Kulabu (Mwamba) Ladies and Quins queens, had shown great promise in picking the cup but fell at sudden death to the Nakuru side 15-10.

The ladies tournament kicked off on Friday alongside the high school category, with three pools of three teams each. USIU, Comras, Newlight, Nakuru, KQ Select and Huruma Girls were among the ladies teams in attendance. The top three teams and the best runner up would then qualify for the semi final later the same day.

Huruma Girls were among the stand out teams from last year, having given Nakuru a real run for the cup. This year however, they failed to make the semis, after losing to KQ select and Comras at the pool stages.

University side, USIU, are new in the women’s league but have shown great promise. Led by Odiero Jordan, the team has managed in a short time to come up with numbers that have allowed them to participate in many ladies’ tournaments.

Comras, a ladies side that consists of young girls who have grown in the game through community rugby. Known for their kicking skills and speed, they were a great contender for the cup and proved it by managing to make it to the semi final.

KQ select had previously fallen to Comras at the pool stages 10-5 but had managed to win their other matches against Huruma Girls and USIU to clinch the last semi final slot. The duet team came in strong in their semi final to beat Comras 10-5 at sudden death to book a final slot against Nakuru Ladies.

The final played on Saturday afternoon was an exciting tough game, with nothing to pick between the two sides at full time, scores tied at 10 all. This saw the sides play sudden death, a knock on from the KQ select side made it easy for the Nakuru ladies to get possession and hit the try line first to be crowned the winners.

The sides will meet again this Sunday April 12th at the KRFUEA Grounds for the start of the Women’s 10-aside league.
