The first round of the ladies league, played out at the RFUEA grounds on Sunday, just a few days to the 3rd anniversary of former Lionesses captain Aberdeen Shikhoyi.
The participating women’s teams included back to back great rift women’s champions Nakuru RFC, KCB ladies, Mwamba Ladies, Quins Queens and USIU.
KCB Ladies lead the league after round 1, courtesy of a superior points tally, after beating USIU 45-0. That win saw them take the top spot even after having fallen to the Black Shirts, Mwamba Ladies, 12- 5. The KCB side, led by Philadelphia Orlando alongside other Kenya internationals Janet Midecha, Millicent Opala, and Janet Akello, also beat the Quins queens 24-0 and Nakuru 25-0.
Mwamba ladies side looked set to finish top after beating KCB, Nakuru and USIU. They however were unable to get past Quins even though they dominated both the possession and territory stats. Quins defended resolutely to go on and record a 7-5 win.
The black shirts side stand second on the log, coached by Kevin ‘Bonke’ Atandi and Phillip Wesonga, boast of experienced players like Mary’Mungiks’ Otieno, Celestine Masinde and Catherine Abilla with new comers Sinaida Aura in the backs and Lynette Wahome in the forwards. Alonside KCB, they look like the favourites for the cup.
Quins Queens came in third with a total of 40 points. The team is coached and captained by Kenya Scrum Half Mary Musieka and made great use of Forward Sheila Chajira to give their opponents a difficult time in attack and defense. The team that comprises of new comers had great chemistry between the backs and the forwards that led to their three victories and kept them in the race to take home the cup.
Nakuru RFC failed to hit their mark after recording 3 losses and a win in their 4 matches, that win coming against USIU. The side, will most likely recover in the upcoming games and get back into the fight with the top sides.
USIU made big strides at the weekend. Though still in the initial stages of learning the game, the ladies from the Thika Road based private University will become be a top notch team in the near future. With great numbers and support from the institution. The team lost all their games at the weekend to finish bottom of the standings.
The teams were each awarded four balls each by the KRU Women’s Director, as an acknowledgement of participation and to help boost their training, in preparation for the next tournament.
The next round of matches are set for April 25th/26th 2015 at the Nairobi 10 A-side Tournament. It will be the second of a series of four tournaments, which will culminate in the crowning of the Women’s Champion.
