The second round of the Kenya Rugby Union Women’s League was held last weekend at the KCB Ruaraka grounds with Mwamba ladies taking the top spot after beating KCB in a tight battle.
Four teams participated in the round robin tournament, Mwamba, KCB, Kenya Harlequins Queens and Nakuru. USIU failed to attend the tournament sighting administration issues.
KCB ladies were first on the field against Nakuru. The KCB lionesses made great use of their experience to beat the young Wanyore Ladies side and take an early lead in the tournament. Mwamba then met the Quins queens in the second game of the day.
The two sides had met the previous weekend in the Nairobi 10’s final where Mwamba emerged victorious, the queens were out for revenge. The Mwamba ladies however, refused to sink in and came out ahead with a 33-0 lead over Quins.
The third match was a closely fought out contest with KCB taking on Quins. The two were at the end separated by two points after Quins failed to convert one of their tries to hand KCB a 19-17 win.
The battle between Mwamba Ladies and KCB Ladies was fittingly the final match of the day, to determine who will finish top.
At the breather, Mwamba had managed to cross the try line twice to KCB’s one. A more intense second half saw a brawl break out leading to a one minute break.
Mwamba then scored their third try upon resumption of play, through Janet Owino, who also made the conversion. KCB took advantage of their numerical upper hand in the dying minutes to stage a comeback, this after the referee sent out two Mwamba Players. It was however a bit too late as they only managed to score once through Philadelphia Olando with Kulabu holding on for a 19-10 result.
Nakuru fell to all three teams but promised to redeem themselves in the next tournament. The KRU Women’s Director, Paula Lanco who was in attendance stated that the players to represent Kenya in the upcoming Elgon cup will be selected from the various clubs in the third league of the tournament slated for May 24th.
“I commend the Nakuru side that managed to make their way here from Kakamega where they played an exhibition match. To play in the national side you must have first played at the club level, all players that will play at Elgon Cup will come from among you. We will be visiting you at your training and selection will be done at the next leg.”
