Ladies and gentlemen…boys and girls, the 2nd leg of 2016 Women 10s festival is upon us*drum rolls please*!
The teams for the weekend:
Mwamba Ladies, who have started off their title defence on the right note having come out tops in the 1st leg that was hosted by USIU. Mwamba come into the second leg having only been handed a loss at the hands of the Quins Ladies, a loss that was later avenged in the final. If they keep up the momentum, the ladies may well be on their merry way to a second title, challenging their male counterparts to up their game.
Quins Ladies come into the tournament second on the log after a fantastic run in the 1st leg of the tournament with their only defeat coming in that final at the hands of the Mwamba Ladies. Mary ‘Serevi’ Musieka and Irene Otieno have been leading the ladies from the front. Keep an eye out for Rudisha on the wing, she was a thorn in the flesh of opposing teams during their matches!
KCB are currently third on the log but a real contender to upset Kulabu’s hopes of pulling off a double. Between Phila, Rudisha and newbie Marie, these ladies are bad news. With Phila’s straight lines and hard hitting breaks and Shebesh and Marie running circles round people on the pitch, give them space and you shall be left eating nothing but dust and grass!
Nakuru ladies are a serious force to reckon with. They come into the 2nd leg at number 4, narrowly losing out on a spot in the final with a 15-10 loss at the hands of the Quins Ladies. These young girls, and yes, young as most of them are still in high school, in them lies the future of Women’s rugby!
They played a very good support game in attack and were solid in their defence. Hats off to their #9 who ‘pangas’ their game like a Nigerian trying to fit as many vitenges in a Ghana must go, with precision!
Shamas are newbies on the block. They are currently placed at number 5 with their two wins of the tournament coming against USIU Martialettes.
USIU aka the Martialettes- if you have been following the ladies games, from the first time these ladies took to the pitch till now, you would be forgiven for mistaking them for a totally revamped outfit! The confidence of the Martialettes has grown in leaps and bounds. Under the stewardship of Dana De Grazia and the watchful and ever reliable Jordan Weaver, these ladies may soon become a force to reckon with!
Black Babes another newbie on the block. The Babes from the Kenyatta University come into the 2nd leg 7th on the log having registered only one win in the previous leg.
Kabras Women’s Team are scheduled to be making their debut this weekend. Shall we be seeing some Fijian ladies, taking to the pitch as well, yes….no…maybe?
