The Kenya sevens squad to the Hamilton and Sydney legs was announced early yesterday and just like in Dubai, we will not have the likes of Collins Injera, Andrew Amonde, Willy Ambaka or Billy Odhiambo donning the mighty red shirt of the Shujaa.
So how did we get here? Coming into the new season, KRU had no means to finance the sevens program to the standard it had been funded before with a title sponsor in place. Which meant that the players couldn’t enjoy the same perks they did previously.
Seems straight forward right? Welcome to Kenya rugby where everything is anything but straight forward!
The situation above has played out to this point, where up to 16 senior players have stayed away from the team and from the Chairman’s comments yesterday, it seems that we have reached a point where no one wants to listen to the other.
So where does that leave us? Well as fans we can do little to solve the above but we can rally behind the current team who need all the support they can get.
While we hope for the resolution of the situation, we might as well get acquainted with the future of the Kenya 7s nice and early.
So let us get behind the boys, shall we?
KWISHA…Nimeruka Nje!!!
