Kai Memorial Cup – Play With Heart, Remember With Joy!

The Kai Memorial Cup is an annual touch tournament, played in memory of a bright, fearless, joyful young boy, Kai Edwards, whose life was tragically cut short by an accident. Kai’s love for rugby was already known to all, especially at his home club Nondies, leading to the idea of the tournament.

The tournament, which will play its second edition this Saturday, 5th of July, at the Red Lion, is not only a celebration of Kai’s life, but a celebration of the sport of rugby and what makes it special, family.

“The Kai Memorial Cup is our way of channeling our grief into something beautiful and lasting. It’s about keeping his spirit alive on the pitch, where he was happiest, and giving other children the chance to experience that same joy, freedom, and sense of belonging.” Said the dad, Sean Edwards.

“We are also aiming to raise funds to help children go to school and gain access to rugby training.” Kai’s mum added.

On the field, the tournament will be played across seven categories, from U-5 through to senior level, in teams of up to 10 players.

On their expectations for the second edition, the family said, “We are looking forward to the energy, the laughter of the kids and adults participating, supported by the cheers from the sidelines, and the magic of seeing a community come together in Kai’s name.”

“We are also looking forward to seeing children who might not otherwise get these opportunities playing their hearts out. Our motto is “Play with heart. Remember with joy” and our wish is that this is embraced not only on Saturday but in everyday life as part of Kai’s legacy!”

As a parting shot, the family had a reminder of what rugby is… Rugby is more than a game! The rugby fraternity is an amazing community that offers support during both highs and lows. Let’s keep growing the game that gives so many people from all walks of life joy, purpose, and connection.
